2nd Annual Local Harvest Benefit Dinner

2nd Annual Local Harvest Dinner
On Saturday, August 27th at Camp Glen Brook, good friends came together to enjoy great food. The absolute best in locally sourced farm-to-table fare was served with wine and beer pairings.

Live music and a stunning view of Mt. Monadnock set the background for the evening. It doesn't get any better than that!

All proceeds benefited The Community Kitchen, the largest food pantry in the Monadnock Region.

FIRST ANNUAL LOCAL HARVEST DINNER-2015
When it was announced that the Keene Pumpkin Fest was cancelled for this year, and possibly forever, you could hear a collective gasp throughout the non-profit sector in and around Keene. The Festival had been a money maker for many small organizations such as the Kitchen, for years.

The Board had formed a Development and Fundraising Committee for just such an occasion as this and they put their heads together and came up with an event that would, hopefully, replace the lost revenue from Pumpkin Fest.

It was decided we should host a farm to table style dinner but, as there were several advertised for the summer, we would call ours a Local Harvest Dinner. And the planning began...

We booked the Keene State Camp for our day of choice, the end of August to tie in with the Harvest theme, and also to be able to have the dinner outside with the use of their pavilion - should the New England weather choose not to cooperate. The planning took months but finally the day of the event arrived. The weather was more perfect than could have been wished for and work began at 7am!

Tables, chairs, tablecloths, napkins, china, silverware, glasses, decorative lanterns and lights, trash bags and anything else you can think of was taken to the camp. Volunteers, staff and Board members worked all day to transform the Camp pavilion into a dining room worthy of a 5-star restaurant.
At a little after 5pm the invited guests started to arrive and mingle and our first ever Local Harvest Dinner was underway...and what fun it was! We had chosen to serve local wine and beer to compliment the local meat, vegetables and bread and were delighted to partner with the Walpole Mountain View Winery and the Brewers at Nye Hill Farm, who donated their award winning NyePA.

Hosting our first ever local Harvest Dinner at the Keene State camp at Wilson Pond gave us the opportunity not only to make the camp feel like a 5-star restaurant but allowed the guests to enjoy the informality of the setting. Before the meal they could sit and enjoy the wine and appetizers. We had a lovely mix of people, some longtime supporters of the Kitchen and some who were learning about the Kitchen for the first time... hard to believe, I know!

We were lucky to have Luca Paris help us at the very beginning but the Kitchen cooking crew took up the challenge and produced a meal that was not only delicious, but also used almost entirely local produce - and there was also a chance for them to purchase food for a meal, something they are not normally allowed to do. The Hot Meals Program uses salvaged or donated food only, on a daily basis, to feed the 90-120 people we serve.

It was a delightful event and we had many compliments from the guests, which is always a good thing. We learned a lot from this event, but more importantly raised nearly $13,000 and cannot express our thanks enough to C&S, our event sponsors, and all who came or those who donated toward the event, even though they couldn't attend.

The funding needs of The Community Kitchen are constant and continuous to enable us to provide the food needed by our Hot Meals and Pantry programs - we regularly serve over 7,000 people a month - having fun while fundraising is just a bonus.
